Assessing your ear health and removing wax build up

The system Ear Love uses enables our practitioner to safely deliver microsuction wax removal to deliver a safe, and painless treatment as it gently suctions wax from the ear.

Find out more about the procedure below.

1. Assessment

Prior to commencing the procedure, your clinician will discuss with you the benefits of removing wax from your ears.

In order to check that it is safe to proceed you will be asked some questions about the health of your ears and general health. It will also be necessary to carry out a detailed visual examination of your ears to determine if there is any wax present.

2. Treatment

You may be advised to soften the wax with olive oil prior to your appointment but please discuss this with us, especially if you are a hearing aid wearer as an alternative treatment should be used.

Microsuction Wax Removal

If clinically indicated and there are no contraindications to proceed, we will utilise microsuction to remove the wax in your ears.

3. Review

Occasionally, it is not possible to remove all the wax at one appointment.  There are various reasons for this, most commonly because the wax is hard or very far down the ear canal.  In these instances, the clinician will discuss the best way forward.  Generally, you will be asked to use an olive oil spray for around ten to fourteen days to soften the wax prior to a repeat visit to remove the wax.

Remote Review

On rare occasions, wax removal may not be possible – in these situations, alternative routes of action will be discussed.

You remain in control at all times.

If further investigation is needed, we have the remote support of a team of audiologists and ENT specialists who we can call on for advice and guidance.

4. Aftercare

Keeping ears dry for a minimum of 24 hours after the appointment is important. It can be helpful to use a cotton wool ball in the entrance to the ear canal covered with petroleum jelly when showering.

Following the procedure if you have any discomfort, pain, swelling, discharge, odour or disruption to your hearing inform your clinician or seek advice from an appropriately qualified medical professional immediately.

Further Appointments

Repeat visits may be necessary to complete the procedure. This will be discussed at your appointment.

You may want to consider booking with us again annually to ensure your ear care is always in tip-top condition.
